Torre del Greco
Torre del Greco, whose origins goes back to the Roman time, rises in the center of the Gulf of Naples and it expanded between the Vesuvio and the Tirrenean Sea, very close to the famous archeological sites of Ercolano and Pompei. It is an harbour city and with its onehundred thousand citizens is the third most populate center of the region Campania after Naples and Salerno. The mild climate and the beautiful landscape of tha Naples' Gulf have always fascinate the men of the past. Here Giacomo Leopardi and the First President of the Italian Repubblic, Enrico De Nicola, had a stay together with other important persons. Torre del Greco is important for the coral and cameo's carving: most of Torre's fishermen, that in the end of the XVIII century found the "red gold" in the Mediterranean Sea, are today craftsmanship, devoted to the carving and to the commmerce of cameo and corals' products. Torre is today considered as the world capital in working corals and cameo. The ancient Carving school, today Istituto d'Arte Statale, renews and passes on this tradition, developing the artistic powers of many Torre's young people. Others relevant activities in Torre del Greco are the floraculture, the shipyard and the antique trade. Between the monuments we remember the various vesuvian villas; a testimony of Torre Del Greco prestige towards the Borbonic nobilty that in the sixteenth century used to pass the summer in the "city of the coral".
