Cameo
Cameos are artisan products created through the carving of the marine shells' surface. Unknown in the Classic period , the coral manufacturing on cameos starts in the Rinascimento and continue in the subsequent centuries. Since the seventeenth century the history of the cameo lead to Torre del Greco, where in few decades many carving workshops were created.In few years Torre assume a very important role in this sector and nowadays it is the "world capital of cameos on shell". The shells used by the torres' artisans for the cameos manufacturing are the cornelian (cassis rufa), comes from West Africa, and the sardonix (cassis madagascariensis) comes from The Bahamas Islands and Central America. The carving technical of the cameos have not changed during the centuries: the choice and the cut of the shell, the engraving on an established design and the finishing are the activities of Torres' craftsmanship.
Women faces, mythological representations, flowers, animals, landscapes and allegories feature the Torres' cameos;they will enrich collars, bracelets, ear-rings, pendants and broochs to praise the female beauty.
